I tried the e-girl hairstyle: how-to, maintenance, styling, etc. — ha-na (2024)

I’ve decided that I wanted to try the e-girl hairstyle for the summer of 2020. It has honestly been such a roller-coaster but I’m loving it. I’ve always had plain black or balayaged brownish blondish hair, but never did anything super bold. I decided that since I’m working from home anyways and you only live once, I should just go for it. And, I did!

the bleaching process

I was honestly scared cause I’ve never bleached my hair to this extent before. I heard countless horror stories of hair falling out, or hair drying out to an unmanageable extent and I was honestly terrified. But, that didn’t happen to my hair and I was super glad.

I’m no stranger to coloring my hair and I’ve been to tons of different salons, but Jitty’s actually the first salon that I’ve been to that could actually lighten up my hair to this extent without damaging it. The full credit definitely goes to my hairstylist, Lia. She was super patient with me and talked me through all my options, managing my expectations. She also took her time with my hair and I really appreciated it. I honestly felt super bad cause I was there for 5+ hours and a bit after closing, but she really wanted to get the color right and she didn’t want to speed it up just for the sake of saving time.

I absolutely love what she’s done. I think she did such an amazing job and I’m so glad that she did my hair. She really is super super knowledgable about hair. I know that this specific e-girl hairstyle is only bleaching the front part of your face but, I feel like that’s already quite a lot and it can still be quite damaging without the proper treatment. She bleached my hair twice (I think) and gave me an intensive Olaplex treatment amongst other things. I feel like that saved my hair and prevented so much possible damage. I definitely recommend going to a professional who uses Olaplex.

styling

not gonna lie, I find it a bit difficult to style this particular hairstyle. I think the contrast is super nice but I feel like I have to dress more street with it. I tend to gravitate towards black or white clothing (or just anything neutral) and I find it super tricky to style this hair with patterned clothing. I also avoid wearing blues now and I usually wear blue. I just feel like it doesn’t quite match with the hairstyle, but maybe I’m just overthinking it.

care & maintenance

extensive hair care products and patience. I use a lot more products than I did before, tons of olaplex and kerastase. On top of that, washing my hair now takes up to approximately one hour. I wash my hair in steps and I’d have to wait patiently to incorporate all the products in the right order. Disclaimer: my hair is also longer than average, so maybe that’s why it takes longer for me to get this process done.

Note: some of the links below are affiliate links, but I am in no way sponsored to write this article.

– first: Olaplex no. 3 (link)

Olaplex is a bond-builder for damaged hair and it is not a conditioner. It’s a treatment that restores damaged and compromised hair and I think it really works well for me. Learn more about it here. Per the instruction, I first rinse out my hair and then towel dry it. Then, I apply Olaplex no. 3 from my scalp to the ends of my hair. I do think it helps but I have to use so much product cause I feel like it doesn’t spread as well and it doesn’t help that my hair is waist long.

Olaplex recommends that you put it on for at least 10 minutes, but I usually put it on for half an hour.

– second: Shampoo it out with Kerastase Bain Extentioniste (link)

Per the advice of my stylist, I try to not use as much product but rather, I use a small amount and try really hard to work it throughout my scalp. This whole process alone takes me longer cause with a lot of product it’s easier to just cover everything, but with a small amount of shampoo, you really need to take your time to work it in through your scalp (at least for me).

I use this specific shampoo per the advice of my hair-stylist. She knows that I love my long hair and I think this shampoo helps with the hair growth. Too early to tell if this works amazingly, but I’ll update this a little bit later down the line.

– third: applying the Kerastase Resistance Masque Extentioniste for at least 5 minutes (link)

Here I alternate between the extentioniste mask and the purple mask. I mostly use the extentioniste mask cause it’s super hydrating and really good for my long hair. My hair becomes super super soft! But, sometimes I try to incorporate the Kerastase’s purple hair mask (link) to avoid that it becomes too yellow/brassy.

– fourth: heat protection!

Heat protection is super super important when you want to style your hair with heat. I recently just bought the L’Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Heat Protection (link), but I haven’t really used it. I’ve been avoiding heat like crazy cause I just don’t want to damage it. Plus, I’ve been doing a lot of 90s updo so it’s been fine without it so far. I’ll update this once I’ve tried that and other recommendations are greatly welcomed.

– later on: getting your roots done

Obviously this depends on whether or not you’d want to keep this hairstyle, but you definitely need to go back to the salon within 2 months. I’m currently on my 4th week with this hairstyle and a bit of my roots have started to show. If my hair continues to grow at this rate then I’d definitely be back within 2 months. Even if I don’t want to keep this hairstyle, I need to do something to it cause I can’t just phase it out. It’ll grow out super weird cause of the clear contrast. I’ll update this in a few months with what I’ll do, but I’ll most likely keep this hairstyle. I’ve been having so much fun with it and I just love it so much. If anything, I might even go lighter or more ashy like Anetha here. But, it’s too early to tell, let’s see later 🙂

to conclude, was it worth it to have this e-girl hairstyle?

Definitely. I love it and it’s definitely a bold look that I’m excited to try out. I got so many compliments on my hair and it’s just exciting to do something a little bit different than the rest. I’m only 4 weeks in so I don’t really have a full report on this yet, but I definitely think it’s super fun to try out this e-girl hairstyle.

6 months update ♡

I came back to Lia at Jitty’s after having this hairstyle for 6 months. My roots have grown a ton after this long, but it doesn’t bother me. I came in for a haircut and Lia suggested that I tone my hair to remove the yellow/brassiness that is there. It was super cheap to do that and I feel like it gave my hair a new life. I’m obsessed.

sorry about the dirty mirror!

There are definitely days where I miss having my OG black/brown hair, but I definitely love this hairstyle. I was about to book another session to bleach my roots but right after the Dutch prime minister announced that we’re going for another lockdown until January 19. Until then, I’m totally content with this look and I’m definitely still having my fun with it ♡

a year-ish update?

Sometime before I started my new job in April, I dyed my hair again with the amazing Lia. I got extremely lucky with this hairstyle and she’s honestly a genius. It looks super blonde from the front, but it’s actually super dark in the roots. I guess what I’m trying to say is – I’m just happy I went on this e-girl hairstyle journey.
